Quantum® Sails Dominate J/24 Worlds
Quantum Sails finished first, third and fifth at the 2010 J/24 Worlds hosted in Malmo, Sweden. Ten Races were sailed over the five-day regatta, held from August 16-20. Competing were 55 boats from twelve countries from as far away as Japan and Singapore. First place was Quantum One Design’s Tim Healy, with teammates Gordon Borges, John Mollicone, Moose McClintock and Dan Rabin. Third place was Quantum Italy’s Andrea Casale and fifth was Ian Brown’s team from Quantum UK. The breeze was appropriately challenging, with the lightest races sailed in 5-10 knots and the heaviest in about 30 knots. The first three days saw the wind dragged around by storm cells, temperatures in the low to mid 60s, and plenty of rain. The last two days were a bit warmer and partly cloudy skies. The race committee, led by Peter Reggio, did an outstanding job of staying on top of the ever-changing, shifty conditions.
The top Quantum® boats all used the new 2010 model J/24 class sails. These are the TH-2 Main, the SF Tri Radial Blade Jib, the Technora Tri Radial Genoa and the Full Radial Spinnaker. All of these sails were updated in 2010. They are smoother and more forgiving in a wide range of conditions. The Technora Genoa is now faster and more powerful. It has the punch in the light to moderate conditions and the low stretch and durability for the upper range. The main is super smooth with the ideal amount of return at any given rig setting, which translates to an appropriate amount of leach tension in a wide variety of conditions. The blade, constructed using the highest quality 8 oz. fabric, is sewn in a radial design to maximize durability. This sail can perform in 30+ knots as well as provide the power necessary in the lulls. The spinnaker is a modification of the Quantum® Classic that was introduced in 1997. This full radial can sail deeper because of its projection up high and depth down low. This sail is also famous for its ease of use in light to moderate conditions.
